Sayonara Norokko Train
The beloved Norokko summer sightseeing train did its last run on September 23 following nearly 3 decades of service. Folks were at every station, and indeed, every crossing to catch a glimpse of the colorful train and give it a fond last goodbye.
JR Hokkaido created a special commemorative locomotive badge for the last day, and the keychain and magnet versions have been a hot item for the last couple of weeks. The conductors even wore special shirts.
So what about next year? Good question! JR Hokkaido has announced the more modern replacement train named the "Blue Star" or Aoihoshi. While not open-air like the Norokko, it does feature large windows, and a unique, comfortable interior.
Thank you Norokko for so many enjoyable rides and allowing thousands to enjoy the beautiful Furano countryside in a wonderful, nostalgic manner.
See you in Furano.
